Our company works using a collective research method roughly modeled after the Joint Stock Company that was active in the UK during the 1970s. This method uses the entire company during a workshop period to investigate, interrogate, and explore a topic through active dramaturgical practices. These include interviews, observations, recordings, engagement with communities, traditional research methods, improvisations, physical explorations, and discussion. Rather than devising a production collectively, the team produces a flood of ideas, material, events, and information for the writer. The writer then generates the script. The result is new work that is uniquely possible based on the environment in which it was researched, written for the actors who participate, embeds design from the earliest moments, and is at once the writer’s familiar voice and yet profoundly influenced by the process.
